Here we are, at the end of my five part series to help you save a little bit on your car insurance premiums. I do hope that my advice has helped you a little bit and if not I hope you at least enjoyed reading it. So here are my final two bits of advice, for now.

Tip #9 – Eliminate unnecessary policy extras

There is a whole myriad of optional extras car insurance companies want you to pay for and a lot of the time they are unnecessary. So what shouldn’t you be paying extra for? Well, courtesy cars, being covered to drive other people’s cars and cover abroad all seem like very beneficial extras, but how often, if ever, will you actually need them?

Some car insurers even offer “handbag cover”, but if you have contents insurance on for your home then it should already be covered, so in essence you could quite easily be paying for something twice without even realising it.

Tip #10 – Be a safe driver

It is the by far the easiest way to keep your car insurance premiums low, don’t claim. Accumulate no claims discounts and the easiest way to do that? Don’t have accidents, drive safely and everything should be okay. You no claims discount can also be transferred between insurers and you could receive as much as 75% discount on your premiums!

There are also options available that allow you to protect your no claims bonus so that one accident doesn’t ruin years of your careful driving. So stick to the speed limit, be careful and you will be an insurers dream and they will reward you for it.

Thank you for reading my series of articles and I do hope you found them informative.

It is the penultimate article in my series on cutting some car insurance costs. I have up to now shared six great ways to decrease your car insurance premiums and I still have a couple left up my sleeve. I hope that these articles have been informative and that you will keep an eye out for my other writings, but enough about that, let’s get down to it.

Tip #7 – Why not increase your excess?

You might be reading this thinking “but why would I want to do that?” Well, it is relatively simple because the more excess you are willing to pay, when you need it, the lower your car insurance premiums will be. This is a great way for young drivers that might struggle to afford their insurance premiums, to pay a little less every month towards insurance.

You do need to be careful that you don’t raise your excess to a level that you won’t be able to afford on any given day of the month, but you will save some money by just adding £50 to a voluntary excess.

Tip #8 – Park safely

One of the first questions you are asked when taking out a car insurance policy is “Where do you park your car?” This will cover various times of the day as well, like overnight parking, where you leave your car at work, etc. The best you can do is to park in a secure garage behind a locked gate, but if space doesn’t allow it then you should find an off-road spot that is safe and secure.

So I only have two more bits of advice for you to help minimise your car insurance costs, so be sure to find part five of the series to find out what they are.

We reach the halfway point in my series of five articles sharing some car insurance tips with you. We all need to watch out wallets a little closer this year and saving money on insurance isn’t as hard as you might think, so have a look at some of my tips and hopefully they can help you!

Tip #5 – Lower mileage, lower premiums

This is about as simple as it gets, if you drive less annually your premiums will be lower. So if you have made a conscious decision to drive less (or maybe you have retired and feel driving is unnecessary) then let your car insurance provider know otherwise you will continue to pay higher premiums when you really shouldn’t.

An easy way to ensure you are insured for the correct mileage annually is to check your MOT certificate just to make sure that you are insuring your car for the correct mileage.

Tip #6 – Think about buying a cheaper car

It may seem pretty obvious, but when you are looking around at buying a car, try and get one in a lower insurance group and that could save you quite a bit of money in the long run. Most UK car insurers us the Association of British Insurers’ (ABI) group rating and that dictates that if you should drive a sports car you can expect high premiums (particularly for male drivers under 30 years of age) and if you drive a cheaper more reasonably priced car your motor insurance premiums will be significantly less. So think carefully before purchasing your next car.

There are only two instalments left in this series, but keep an eye out for them, you might just pick up something you didn’t know.
