At first glance, working from home seems like the dream job.

What could be more appealing than a work from home job? Wake up in the morning, work a few hours, and then do just as you please... but be warned, there are some very important issues to be aware of when working from home.

There are issues like health benefits, fluctuations in your monthly income and self employment taxes and insurance to consider, to name a few. These, and other, hidden costs can make or break your work from home career. On the subject of insurance, those who intend to run a business from their homes must be aware that regular UK home insurance policies may not cover your business related equipment and so on – you will need specialised cover for your business. House insurance from Prudential is one policy which covers your home office equipment up to £5,000.

In order to assess whether or not you are ready for a work from home career, answer these questions: Do you enjoy working independently? Do you like to think through and resolve problems yourself? Can you set and stick to a schedule? Are you a self-disciplined person?

If you can honestly answer these questions in the positive, then maybe you are ready to work from home. But remember, working from home isn’t all fun and freedom – it takes serious self discipline and lots of hard work to complete work within the deadlines, especially with all the distractions that your home has to offer.

Pets, children, visitors and more can all take hours out of your work day, so if you are serious about working from home you will have to minimise all distractions, such as unplugging your home phone or asking neighbours not to drop by in your working hours.
You will probably find yourself working harder and even maybe longer hours than you did at your regular job, but the good news is that you will be working for yourself, which is usually worth the sacrifices you may have to make in order to succeed.
